Overzicht
The Glazen Duo is an office complex at the Utrecht Business Park Papendorp. The two towers are connected by a transparent low-rise building containing the central entrance. To give an impetus to the rental of the towers, Mirato was asked to design the entrance and transform it into a vibrant meeting place, thus putting the Glass Duo on the map.
Issue
In addition to creating a bustling communal space that invites you to meet, it was important to make the entrance more visible, which until now has been lost in the austere façade. We wanted to include the outdoor space at the back of the building in the entrance in order to make a connection between inside and outside.
Concept
Our goal was to create a design that matches the current architecture of the building. The towers have a diagonal location and consist of oblique angles and lines. We were inspired by this and started playing with sight lines, angles and diagonal shapes. We created “sitting islands” by means of triangles in the floor and ceiling, which we let go outside, increasing the meeting area.
Design
To add warmth to this glass building, we made the seating islands and frame from light European oak. Together with many plants, this provides a contrast to the hard glass façade. Because the wooden panels are all at an angle, the sight lines change while walking, providing dynamism and movement. We break open the façade to the outside and let the shapes flow through, so that the area feels like a whole.
