Overzicht

The roof garden is a large play area, where patients at the Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, their brothers, sisters and friends can forget they're sick and do what all children love to do: play. Accompanied by their parents, they can ride a bike, climb, do arts and crafts or even play outside.

STARTING POINTS

Based on experience and research, the Ronald McDonald House formulated a number of principles that the new roof garden had to meet. The most important of these were: playing (ages 0 to 18), meeting and relaxing. A place where children can forget about their illness for a while.

CONCEPT

The roof garden is a household name within the Ronald McDonald organization. Mirato showed in a pitch that if you look closely at a garden, it contains all the ingredients that children and their parents need to relax and forget about the disease. The concept is based on three pillars: Playfulness, Security and Wisdom that come together in an “Alice in Wonderland-like world. The design has almost only rounded shapes, giving the space a friendly and dynamic character. A contrast with the sleek and clinical hospital. In this way, it offers children the opportunity to completely escape within a hospital environment. The basis is timeless, calm and playfulness is brought in by the shapes and loose toys.

CONSPICUOUS ELEMENTS

The roof garden has been decorated with different corners where there is something for all visitors. The children can follow the tracks on the floor and thus discover the possibilities of the roof garden. There is a lovely chill out area for teenagers, a climbing and climbing corner for the little ones and a baby play area. The eye-catcher in the interior is a large tree with a skylight above it. It emphasizes the concept of a roof garden and connects the world inside the hospital with the world outside.

'A DARING AND SURPRISING DESIGN THAT WENT BEYOND 'JUST' FURNISHING A SPACE. THE PROCESS WAS TOUGH, BUT WE NOW HAVE A BEAUTIFUL NEW ROOF GARDEN'

COOPERATION

The process from the first idea to the realization of the design has been a great success thanks to intensive cooperation between all parties involved: the LUMC, Ronald McDonald House, volunteers, visitors and all suppliers.
